Here’s a great idea for reaching under-motivated students, making use of two powerful tools: video technology and older peers. Older, successful students, from a high school or college, commit to a weekly 15-minute group video chat with a group of struggling students at a middle or elementary school, anywhere else in the world. The approach, dreamed up by student Chelsea Dale, is called On Giant’s Shoulders.
The beauty of this approach is that it puts connectivity at the top of the priority list. It isn’t about tutoring, homework help or lecturing. Rather, it’s about reaching out and making a human connection. To sweeten the deal, anyone with an internet connection and Skype or similar services can put this together at no cost at all.
